There are too many 'long stories' in this narrative, so I'll just plug in a couple of ** when there's TMI in the woodwork.

Walla Walla turned out to be a bad idea for my first college experience**, and I took off in the middle of my second year to try to grow up a little.  San Francisco seemed like a good destination (I'd just read On the Road ); Haight/Ashbury meant nothing to me when I got there, but people kept telling me that was the place to go.  Within a month I was living on Haight Street, and before long I was hitching up and down the coast, spending time at Strawberry Fields/Desolation Row** and making a quick visit to Walla Walla and Seattle before setting down in Berkeley (to avoid the so-called 'Summer of Love'**)
where I did a stint cooking for the Provo daily free food in the park** and took the name I've worn ever since.  Went to work at the Post Office (back before 'going Postal' meant any more than being able to wear the clothes and hair one wanted) and saved up to go visiting in England.

I managed to make a 3-month visa last a year and a half, but finally had to depart for Amsterdam**.  A quick trip to the instep of Italy, then back to Amsterdam by way of Firenze (one of the most beautiful places in the world!!) and an unwilling return to the US**.

Seattle was in the 'Last one leaving turn out the lights' phase of its development, and I went from bad jobs to worse** and finally accepted my mother's advise and went to nursing school.  My nursing career (PM&R, UW Medical Center) supported me as a traveler**, theatre junkie**, opera fan** and kaleidoscope collector** for 23 years, when the arthritis made working on my feet no longer an option.

South Seattle Community College helped me on my way to a new career in telecommunications; I'm approaching 5 years now in my current position with a company which supports wireless 911 calling with routing and location information**.

I still fold a lot of paper – I'll be on my way to an origami convention at the end of September – so when you see me at the party, I'll probably be somewhere surrounded by colorful geometric constructions, happy to fill you in on any of the ** items above.
